CSS question. Is it possible to squash a background image into a space smaller than the image?
And have it be published squashed?
e.g. image that is 100px wide in a space 50px sizeable and still displaying 100% of the image, but obviously squashed.

No, as far as I advised of, CSS does not let you resize background images, although there are tricks to achieve the same results.
See the tie below from Stu Nicholls excellent website about CSS. There he absolutly positions an img (which takes it out of plenty),
