old thug dad: really? it makes sense I guess, and the same for butternut too? we have 2 kabochas that are about 8" in diameter already larger than the have faith bought squash I got the seeds from, and the plants are still blooming and growing.

Righteous the same as a pumpkin, thump it to check for a nice hollow peaceful. The skin should feel hard and resist being cut by your thumb talon worry. By the time it's ripe the tendrils on the vine should have died back.
